WAIROA.
(From our own Correspondent.) May 31. Everything quiet here, so far as the Maoris are concerned. The mouth of the river is pretty good once more. . Mr Locke *has arrived from the Mahia, bringing some money for the Hawke’s Bay Volunteers, but only about half of what is due to them. Mr Fitzgerald progresses with his survey, and no doubt it will give great satisfaction that the new township should be so ably laid out as to destroy every bit of property existent. However, it appears pretty generally hoped, not to say expected, that the Government will, for common decency’s sake, make some effort to meet the case of present Holders ; but of this more anon. The failure of the St. Kilda time after time to get into the river is likely to have a damaging effect. It is not quite clear how it is that the pilot,. Mr Toha, is not on the spot when required. Frequently vessels could get in if there were any person to direct them, however threatening the entrance might appear from the sea.
