LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Fanatics ax Poverty Bay.— Headed by the chief Lazarus, the fanatics have succeeded in reducing this district to a state of utter confusion, and an outbreak seems imminent, the groat bulk of the natives being either converts to the superstition, or so wavering as to be ready to yield at the slightest inducement. Under these circumstances we should suppose the proper course to pursue would be to execute his Excellency's late proclamation, and by a body of armed police to apprehend the disturbers of the public’ peace ; but not so. The usual temporising remedy of the Missionary and M’Lean is being applied to stave off the day of outbreak for a short time, his Honor the Superintendent and the Bishop of Waiapu having left in the St. Kilda for the purpose of visiting the disorderly district, on Saturday afternoon. Government Gazette. —A Provincial Government Gazette was published on Saturday, the 3rd inst., containing a proclamation of the appointment of John D. Ormond. Esq., Deputy Superintendent, and a notification of the sale of Crown Lands to take place on the 4th July prox. (Fide advertisement.)
