M. Herald, May 18. Withdrawal of the Troops.— We understand that the authorities have so much confidence in the possiblity of withdrawing a portion of the troops from New Zealand this year, that their financial arrangements are based on the assumption that five battalions will return home. The 65th, 7th 43rd, 68th, and 40th, are the regiments to be brought to England, should events justify this happy anticipation. —Some News. The Three Million Loan.— The absorption of capital by our colonies continues to keep peace with that consequent.on foreign loans and enterprises. The Confiscated Land.— ln the House of Commons, on the 23rd March, Mr Kekewich asked the TJnder-Secretary of State for war whether the commanding officers of the various corps in New Zealand bad preferred any claims to the proceeds arising from the sale of lands captured from the enemy; and whether the Government had any intention of paying them a part of these proceeds as prize-money? The Marquis of Harrington said it was a fact that an application had been made by some of the troops ii New Zealand for a share in the prize money that would arise from the sale of the land captured by the troops- But he was not aware of any circumstance under which land captured by military forces had been considered convertible into prizemoney. (Hear, hear). Therefore, if any recommendation to such effect came from the colony, it would not be complied with.
