AUCKLAND. Southern Cross Office, . - . ; Friday evening. May 12. There has been a decided improvement during the last Week in respect of monetary transactions, Bills falling due have been met with mpre ease than was, anticipated, and altogether &ti improved feeling! has prevailed. There Arc grounds for believing that we may expect an improvement soon in business. The hind which has beeil lately offered for sale in the neighborhood of the town has brought high prices, having been' purchased principally by working men who have saved money, and are investing it in that way; and it is a curious fa<!t that idany of the buyers pay the amounts down in cash, haying apparently been their own bankers. There - Can be little doubt that a good deal of cash is kept in this way in Auckland, and does not therefore pass through the Banks. ♦ . • As respects goods, the state of the market here - for alpros t all kinds may be expressed in one word—over-stocked. Tins' liar been shown most distinctly in the sales of groceries that have taken place during this week, the largest held by Air Cochrane, on .Thursday. The goods then disposed of went - at prices that must fall a go-d way short of remunerative. Notwithstanding the low prices that prerail, there is apparently no tendency to purchase for speculation ; this feature has always been characteristic of the. Auckland market. Advices received by the last mall report that shipments have fallen off fo some extent; but the news has apparently Lad little, if any, effect. It will be seen from the figures we give below respecting tire goods on board the Dauntless, that many of the articles which are most plentiful in the market will receive no accession: by its cargo. Flour seems to have a downward tendency, one firm having advertised that they have made arrangements to Supply Adelaide flour at £24 an dChilan at £2O. Stocks of all kinds of bulling materials are plentiful, and the prices downwards. Live stock- mabket. ~ May 12. Mr Euckland reports as follows; There is no activity in the horse market; purchasers act with caution, and but little business is transacted. A largo number of draught horses are offering, w th little prospect of immediate sale at remunerative prices. At Otahuhu, on Tuesday, a small show. of cattle sold at fully late rates. The inquiry for, store sheep is steady. Half-bred wethers in good condition brought 2Ss 6rf and 50s Merino wethers, 18s fid each, • At Newmarket, on Thursday the inclement weather prevented anything but butchers’ stock being brought forward. Prom 80 to 90 head well-fatted cattle sold freely at late rates. Fat Calves were in fiiir supply, and brought front £2 10* to £1 10» each. Sheep were in short supply, yet. prices were in favor of the h*iver. Well-fatted pigs brought 6 \d Messrs Hunter & Co. report as follows ’ The fat cuttle market was slightly depressed this week. - Prices are not ruling quite so high as they have been, but this remark applies more to second qualities; really prime futilities (of which the market appears to be short) sell well and fully maintain former quotations. We had a full market, which were mostly all disposed of at a slight reduction on hist week’s rates; medium qualities worth about 3i» the KWhs. Store stock, nearly fat, sold freely; those in , low Condition, very difficult to move off. Good dairy cows: very fewoffering; prices continue high. Working bullocks: very little demand for them this week, and prices oonsid irably down. Veal calves: few in the market; but prices good for them.
