WELLINGTON.

(From the New Zealand Advertises.) • Commandant or Defence Fokck. —We understand that Major Eel wards lias resigned the command of the Wellington Defence Force, and that he will now devote himself exclusively to his magisterial duties in the Qlaki district. It is hardly necessary Jto say that during the time Major Ed vards held the command of this corps he proved himself to be a most efficient and energetic officer, and, although, perhaps, he has now been removed to a sphere of labor in which Ins abilities may be of more service to the Government, every person acquainted with this gentleman will regret is departure. We understand that Captain Lcatham another popular and most efficient officer, will now assume the command of the Defence Force. 1

Customs Retubn. —A comparative return of the receipts of Customs for the quarter ended 31st March last, shows that £16,313 18s. 9d. was received, as against £11,726 12s. for the corresponding quarter of last year. The Flour Market. —The scarcity of flour appears to be at an end, and large quantities are daily arriving, and other vessel? are expected. The price quoted yesterday was £23, hut a still further decline-in'a few days is confidently anticipated. INSOLVENCY OF THE WELLINGTON TOWN BOARD. —At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Town Board held on Tuesday last, tlie Chairman made a financial statement showing that—pending monetary assistance forthcoming from some source —the Board was in a hopeless slate of insolvency and the affairs should be wound up. It will be seen from this statement, reported in another column, that the liabilities amount to something like £6BB, to meet which there is only £tl in. hand. The consequence is that the Wellington Town Board will be compelled “ to fake the benefit of the Act” unless the Government will come to their assistance. | Theatre Royal. —Cinderella still continues to attract the Wellington public at this popular place of amusement, and most deservedly so, for each time we witness it we think it more funny. Last night the first piece was the Wreck Ashore, very considerably ashore we should sar, in fact so far inland, that wc saw nothing whatever of the wreck ashore ; however we could scarcely expect more seenlo effect on so small a stage than that we hare already had. The piece itself wrs excellently played. We decline to give the plot of a three act drama, hut it was the usual thing of course, bloodshed and courting, a funny man and a villain, crashes of music ami grand tableaux. Everything went off very well, and we are very glad to find that the lessees of the Theatre Koval find it to the accounct to open their house four nights a week. Qn Friday, the New Zealand Civil Service Dramatic Club oechpy the theatre, and on Saturday a grand day - performance of Cinderella, for the accommodation of the juveniles will take place. ; ■ - s- - ArcitpNEKES’ Licenses. —From a Provincial Government Gazette Issued yesterday we lea|n that auctioneer’s licenses for the current feist ; the* have bcetr-granted to undermentioned ' persons In Wellington : Alfred A.
