SUPPLYING DRINK TO THE NATIVES
To the Editor of the Daily Southern Crons. Sift, —I forward copy of a note from the Von. Archdeacon W. L. W illiams to one of our settlers with his answer. Possibly you may consider it worthy of a place in your paper. 1 am &o , A Povehtv Bay Settles, Tsuranga, Poverty Bay. April 2i, 1835. Waerengaahika, April Ic, 18(13. Sir, —There has been an enormously large amount of spiritious and intoxicating liquor of one sort or another in the hands of the natives of this district during the last few weeks, and universal testimony points to you as the source of supply. You cannot but know what th« hauhau parlyhave threatened to do, and what they w lildhave done, long ago, if th n- had felt themselves strong enough to do it. You mud bo aware also of the great progress which they h ive made and are con tiiming to make in the district. I beg leave, therefore, to remind you that, by furnishing such dangerous characters with an unlimited supply of intoxicating drink, you are setting them free from all restraint, and wantonly endangering the lives of the English residents iu the district. lam&e, W. L. Williams. Mr. Skryme. [The above was returned (lie same evening, with the following endorsement:—] \V. L. Williams will bo kind enough to exhibit both his impertinence, mSlice, and impotence to people who fear him. E. J. S.
