TARANAKI.
We bare our files of Taranaki papers to the 29th ult. The Taranaki Herald saysA skirmish between the enemy’s cavalry and our Mounted Corps occurred on Thursday in the advance on Watea, though it was more properly a chase than a skirmish, as the enemy (about , fifteen) retired precipitately as soon as seen, and were followed at full speed fur three or four miles by our men, who gave them an occasional revolver shot, but without effect, the pace and the ground being unfavorable to accuracy. A military settler, of the name of Benson, belonging to No. 2 Company, stationed at Poutoko, being missed from camp on Thursday last, some of his comrades proceeded in search to the sea beach, it having been noticed that he had gone in that direction. His clothes being found, the supposition was that lie had been drowned in bathing, and yesterday morning the. body was discovered. It was brought into town and an inquest was held on it during the afternoon, when a verdict of “ accidental death” was recorded.
