The Hawke's Bay Times. NAPIER, FRIDAY, 12th MAY, 1865.
ficox after the publication of our journal on Wednesday morning, we were gratified to see the s.s. Egmont steam into the bay with the English mail oh board, the non-arrival of which for so many days had caused serious apprehensions to be entertained for its afety. The news (which extends per telegraph to the 20th March) does not contain much of jtttore than usual interest, and is upon the whole of a satisfactory character. A resume of its more important items will be found in another column. From the gold fields on the West Coast there is news of the success of the late new rush to the southward ; of new ground found and being worked , of several fatal accidents ; and of another steamer (the Bruce) grounded and injured. There was abundance of supplies of all kinds at the Hokitika; the river was being improved; a custom-house , erected, and the township progressing. From Canterbury we learn that the schooner Emerald was on the Kaiapoi bar. The master and men having clung for near twenty hours to the rigging in a fearful Storm, were at last rescued ; the. hull has been sold for£so 10s, and the cargo— timber. Wine, and sundries— for wIOO 10s. The election for the vacant seat of Ilakaia in the Canterbury Council had resulted in the return of Mr Stewart, a candidate opposed to the Government, by a small majority over Mr Stevens, the Government candidate.— Tenders for the Southern Railway had been accepted, and the first portion was to be completed within twelve months.
