LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Held Over.— The continuation of our discussion of the memoranda recently published by ?the Ministry, is unovoidably excluded from this day’s issue. Native Meetings. —During the past two days we have had a very large gathering of native chiefs from all parts of the p > ovtnce, and some from distant places. A dinner wias given them on Monday in the Council Chamber, when they were addressed by his Honor, and yesterday they attended in front of the Civil Commissioner’s Office, and various topics-were discussed, judging from the.excitement displayed on both sides with considerable- warmth. We have not been able to get our report ready for this day’s issue. The rate Me Chicken.—Too late for our impression on Monday morning the news was brought to our office that the body of the unfortunate Mr Chicken had been discovered by a native in the Ngaruroro river. The particulars of the (then-supposed) accident we have given at so recent a date as to be still fresh in the memory of our readers, and we will therefore refrain from their repetition. It is sufficient to say that their truth is now unhappily confirmed. An Inquest on the body was held at Clive on Suiiday, the report of which has not reached us, further than that the verdict returned by the jury from the evidence adduced was “ accidentally drowned.”'
