Passengers —Mr and Mrs Morris and eight natives. - ■■ - * Wreck of the Black Diamond At Taranaki.— We regret to have to record another wreck in this roadstead namely, that of the brigantine Black Diamond, 100 tons register, Lambert, master. This, vessel arrived here on the 30th instant from Ilavelock, with 54,000 feet timber, consigned to Nash, Edwards, & Co., half of which had been landed. The following is the captain’s statement: l — April 23, commenced with light winds from E.N.E., and flue weather but heavy swell running in from N.E. At 11 a.m. wind increasing; parted best bower cable; tried to get sail on the vessel and work out; vessel paying off and not answering helm let go the seoond.anchor, vessel still driving, hoisted ensign union down for assistance. Pilot came off in whaleboat, got the mainsail on her and made all exertion to work the vessel off shore and run her on the beach at Te Henui. The vessel, however, still bumping, cut the second chain, when she came On the reef and became a total wreck." There appears to have been some gross mismanagement with regard to the wreck of this vessel. Signals were made, it appears, from shore for the vessel to stand off before the pilot went on board. The master, however, having neither signals or book, conld not understand them ; and to show the way in which some owners send their vessels to' sea we may mention that she had not eyen a chronometer on hoard. The vessel was the property of Mr Kerr, of Nelson, and Whether insured or not is uncertain.' The hull, spars, anchors, anc chains, life buoy, boat and oars, were sold by public auction on the beach on Tuesday, and realised the gum of £lB 4s. The timber was insured on an open policy with the Bank of New Zealand. — Herald.
