, , AUCKLAND. , Daily Southern Cros* Office, Tuesday Evening. One of the most successful of the many good land sales that have lately been held in Auckland, to jk place in Mr Cochrane's land mart to-day. The attendance In the sale room was very ■ large, and most of the lots were sold to persons who apparently bought, not for speculation but In order to build house? jor themselves. The place to be sold was a paddock between the Park road and the Kyber Pass road, and is certainly one of the finest sites in the city. The prices realised ’ were very good. The whole of the land sold amounted only to five acres, and for this the sum of £B4oO was realised. Messrs Jones & Co. held a sale of galvanised iron to-day. It was disposed of in lots to suit purchasers, at the a\ erage of about £27 per ton. Messrs Harris & Turner sold a quantity of drapery to-day chiefly shirts and prints, at satisfactory prices. Mr Samuel Cochrane sold to-day, at ten o’clock, a quantity of potatoes and fruit. - Apples brought from 5d to 6d; pears per lb.; andthe'potatoes 66s a ton. SAN FRANCISCO. By the Lombard we have a Sydney Herald of the 37th nit., which contains the following California commercial, It is from the Daily Alta California of the 22nd January:— The establishment of steam.communication with Asiatic ports wo learn is again under serious consideration in the Atlantic cities among parlies of wealth and influence. A line of stoaniers from this port to Shanghai or Hongkong, under Government subsidy, may without doubt be looked for at an early’day. The" increasing Importance of our trade with those and other Asiatic pons demands It j although it may he reasonably doubted if at first the enter-' prise, independent of Government aid, would be profitable! to its ;But. it hj jms enterprise which has claims upon Government. Our commercial relations with Oriental countries are perpetually and rapidly extending. The waters of Asiaare the great rendezvous of our largest and best.vessels. The increasing export trade of .this portto China, hot only in breadstuffs, but other merchandise, taken in connection with the vast increase of treasure shipments to that empire, are important elements in the scale, and worthy of special consideration.
