LOCAL AND GENERAL

By favor of Mr Cooper, Civil Commissioner, we are enabled to give in this impression a translation of the speeches made at the late korero briefly referred to in our last. We commend a careful perusal of the whole report to the attention of our readers, who will readily perceive that the district is far from free from the danger of an irruption from the Atua hau parly, encouraged as they are by the wily chief Hapuku, It seems that three parties were to come—the first peaceably, perhaps to pass on merely, as said by Karaitiana; the second only to fight if they met with resistance; but tbe third to commence hostilities in any case. We believe that the translation of Maori expressions is ‘ scarcely ever capable of conveying all tbe force of the original; but here we have tbe truth of the above report confirmed by three voices. We do not suppose that any of tbe above chiefs would be found readily to join Te Hapuku’s party against the pakeha, but numbers of their people might, as a chiefs influence is not now what it once was in this respect. It certainly behoves the Government to look well to this matter, and remember that to he prepared for the emergency is perhaps the only way to prevent it, as it certainly is the best means that can be adopted for this end.

Imported Animals. —We understand that the Napier has brought with her a valuable cow and also two mules, trained for the pack-saddle—a class of animals very useful for certain districts in the province, and which we should like to see more numerous.
