Hawke's Bay Times. NAPIER, FRIDAY, 10th MARCH, 1865.

The organisation ofau efficient Fire Brigade for the town of Napier is a subject that has been often advocated by us in these columns, and we are happy to be able to say that it is at length accomplished. A reference to our local intelligence will afford a brief account of the meeting that was held on Tuesday evening last, and the resolutions passed there.. We believe that the management of the Brigade will be placed in able and willing bands, and have no doubt that, should Napier unfortunrtely require their services, they will be rendered with alacrity and goodwill; but we trust that it may be long ere such a circumstance will occur.

After the want of proper organisation, which has been found the chief obstacle in the way of speedily and effectually checking the ravages of a fire, there are two others of nearly equal force—one of them is disorder of the engine, that too often proves to be nearly useless from leakage and other causes, and the other a deficiency in the supply of water. Of course the first is under the control of the Brigade, who will no doubt see that it is kept in good working order by occasional practical trials, but the oilier is beyond their power, that is, unless it should happen that fires always occurred near a place where water can be easily and plentifully obtained. In this respect Napier has a had name, and justly so. It is in fact famed for it s scarcity of water, most of its inhabitants having to purchase for daily use, and nearly all others depend upon the rainfalls for their supplies. We think it quite time that this question was taken up by the Government with a view to its remedy, and that some

comprehensive, but at the same time economical, scheme should be adopted to supply the tov/n with this element, so essential to the life and health of the people, as well as necessary to be at hand in abundance in case of fire.
