SOUTHLAND.
Southland is at last provided with a Superintendent. On the meeting of the Provincial Council Dr. Menzies and Mr. Heale, the two rival candidates, withdrew their claims, and thus Mr. Taylor was enabled to gain that absolute majority of votes in the entire Council which the Supremo Court has decided to be necessary. The Southland Times says:—“ Southland possesses a Superintendent. The struggle between the partisans of Dr. Menzies and of Mr. Heale has closed. Mr. Taylor has been elected to the post of honor. He has secured one more than the * absolute majority ’ required by the inexorable conditions of the Act. Eleven members of the House gave him their support. Hr. Menzies was one of these. He did a graceful act in being the first to cross the floor when the question was put from the chair to vote with the aves.”
