Mr. S. Cochrane also held a sale of properties, &c., at his land mart, Port-streat, yerterday, but in this sale, as the other, a large number of those offered had to be withdrawn, on account of the apparent unwillingness, to purchase on the part of those who attended the sale. Bather more activity has been manifested in the day’s' operations, although no very large transactions have taken place; and the import market remains somewhat languishing. The stock of Adelaide flour has been added to by the arrival of the Elizabeth, but no alteration in price has resulted, the rate at which sales have been made continuing at £27 to £23. Messrs. M'Landress, Hepburn, & Co., and A. G. Giscner & Co. have held miscellaneous sales at their respective marts; and the latter firm, timber at Stuart-street, as might be expected, selling but little, folks having as yeet scarcely recovered from the holiday .—Baity Times, January 14. January 13, Some improvement was visible in the market to-day. although, perhaps, no very large amount of business was done, a considerable number of country orders came to hand, and the lists embraced a great variety of articles. Twenty tons of sheet zinc changed bands,"a portion at £39 10s, and the hulk at £3O. The same quantity of No. 6 fencing wire was sold at £l6 10s. In kerosene there was something almost approaching a panic. This was occasioned by the arrival of the ship E. Greely off Cape Otwav, early in the day. She had on hoard about 5,400 cases. This induced holders to try to make sales. The highest price obtained for the best brands was only 3s lOld, though 4s 3d was obtained a few days ago. Linseed oil went on rather lower terms. All boiled, in drums, went at 4s 71 d, and half boiled and raw, in casks, at 4s. 3d. Candles are very quiet. Sinclair’s hams are still in good demand. In sugars, second quality crystallized counters sold at £34, and the same description, but of brighter color, £35. By auction, a large quantity of imported goods, in the estate of Cleve Brothers, changed bands at good prices, generally speaking, the attendance having been largo and the competition good. Bread-stuffs are in constant demand, and prices are advancing rather than otherwise. It is most fortunate for consumers that the Chilian merchants forwarded supplies so freely; had we been left to depend on the usual sources of supply, bread long before this would have been at a famine price. On Saturday evening and to-day 500 tons of Chilian flour were sold by one Arm, at prices showing an advance on the prices recently paid for large lots. The balance in hand is held for a higher rate still. Adelaide wheat is worth from 9s 3d to 9s 9d; and the best Adelaide flonr may be quoted at from 23/ to 21/. Among the arrivals off the Otway to-day were the Vfamora, from London and the E. Greely, already noticed, from Boston. The Coleroon. from London, reached Hobson’s Bay early in the day.—Australasian.
