LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Postage on Newspapers.—By advertisement it will be seen that we shall endeavor to meet the wishes of our country subscribers by the publication of a weekly edition after the close of this month. Our town subscribers will continue to receive the usual delivery on the mornings of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in each week. Baby Shows and Prize Babies’—We are sorry to find that these ridiculous and, we had almost said, disgusting exhibitions (borrowed from the Americans) are becoming common in the colonies. We note that so near as at Canterbury there has been one of them during the festivities of Christmas. We think it high time that many of the socalled rural sports of the old country should be consigned to oblivion, as tending to brutalise and degrade instead of elevate the people, and we see no reason for adding to their number an exhibition that reduces°the children of the humble to the level of fat oxen, pigs, and sheep. Bull’s Wellington Almanack.—We acknowledge the receipt of this valuable almanac and directory, and note a great improvement over previous issues. The sailing directions, which extend over some fifty pages of closely-printed matter, are the most complete that has yet come under our observation; the street and trade directory, the farm and garden calendar, &c., seem each as perfect as possible, and will be of great service to many; while the more scientific portion relating to the celestial ephemera, &c., &c., reflects the greatest credit upon the compiler. We have great pleasure in commending this valuable almanac to public favor. N. Z. Herald Sheet Almanac.—We must apologise for having neglected to notice the receipt of this neat almanac before. It was presented to the subscribers of the N. Z. Herald with the number for January sth.
