[BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.] (From the Argus Correspondent.) Sydnet, Dec. 30. The‘Royal Exchange’ brings Californian papers to October 29th, and New York news to the z6th. The telegraph lino broke down three days prior to the vessel’s sailing. The press telegrams confirm the utter defeat of Early by Sheridan. Richmond papers estimate the Confederate loss at 10,000, including 1000 killed and wounded.

Sheridan’s forces scoured the valley on the 21st and 22nd, without finding the enemy. He supposes them to have broken up. Eleven thousand men are ordered to reinforce Early. Hood is still retreating before Sheridan ; the former is suffering from want of supplies, and is likely to fall back on Alabama. Price, attacked by the Federals in Missouri, was defeated with heavy losses, and compelled to retreat, but afterwards defeated a small Federal force under General Blunt. A despatch from Grant states that on the 22nd of October four Confederate ironclads attacked the Federal forts on the banks of the James River. A shaip fight took place. One of the ironclads was disabled, and the others withdrew. A party of Confederates, under the leadership of the officer who previously seized the steamer Chesapeake, captured the steamer Roanoke on her passage from New Orleans to Havanuah. They burned tho vessel, and then made for the coast of Bermuda, where tho authorities seized them on a charge of piracy. Gold is fluctuating. On the 22ad, tho price was 124 premium, but it fell subsequently to 113. There has been a great fire at East Port Maine. The loss is estimated at 600,000 dollars.

LATER NEWS FROM THE SEAT OF WAR. IN AMERICA. Via Sydney, Dec. 30. It is reported that Walker’s division had crossed the Mississippi, either to reinforce Hood, or to annoy Sherman. The Richmond authorities have conscripted onefifth of the employes in the war-office, which caused great dissatisfaction. General Early’s forces are now below Harrisonburg. General Slocum (Federal) is now in possession of Atalanta. Gold, 112. CALIFORNIA. Flour was quoted at 11 dols., and wheat at 3 dols., 70c. to 3 dols., 75c.
