WANGANUI.

The Chronicle of the 24th has the following in regard to the natives;—“We understand that there is now little likelihood of an attack by the rebels on the frondly natives up the river. Pehi, with sixty men, is stationed at a pa about 200 yards beyond the furthest pa up the river occupied by friendly natives, and was said to be intending to make an attack as soon as he had received a reinforcemeht from Taupo, for which he has sent. His messenger, however, lias returned with the information that no assistance can be sent, as a fever has been raging at Tempo which has carried nfl* almost all the fighting men. Wo learn from Mr. E. T. Woon that the Ngatirnanui have resolved te allow soldiers to continue the Waitolara road through the Nukamaru Reserve to the bank of the Woitotara. Hare Tipene has agreed to this; and if the military go out there, they are at liberty to camp on this side of that river, but it they cross they will be fired on. It is also said that a body of Ngatiruanui from Waimato (half-way to Taranaki) have gone with 100 Waibatos under Tikaokao to Tataraimaka, to assist the Taranaki's, should the soldiers come further south than that post. The remainder of Ngatirnanui, on this side of Waimate, are divided into to two parties, one of which is to look after (tiaki) Patea, and the other to help the Ngaraurus in resisting any attempt to carry the road further than the Waitotara. Not withstanding these arrangements, we should think it doubtful whether much resistance will bo made if the formation of the road be vigorously prosecuted. Bewi is at Waikato.
