LOCAL AND GENERAL.

By the N.Z, Co.’s s.s. Lady Bird we have dates from Wellington to the sth insfc., and from Nelson and the Southern Provinces to the 31st ult.— There had been another great fire in Wellington resulting iff the]destruction of eight houses, and threatening that of the whole of the buildings on Lampton Quay; but providentially there was no wind blowing, and there was a plentiful supply of water at hand, from the fact of the tide being high. Particulars will be found in another column.—A meeting had been held in Wellington, at the Athenseum, at which a committee was formed for the establishment of a Fire Brigade.— The swimming bath recently established in Wellington had been materially damaged by a storm. — An extensive robbery had been committed on the Post Office, Otago.—Flour had fallen in Nelson to £25 per ton.—The Canterbury Standard has presented its _ subscribers with a very neat sheet almanac, creditably and tastefully printed in colors.—-We have also received a copy of a shee* almanac, containing a well-executed and artistic wood engraving, presented to the subscribers of the Nelson Colonist.

Eehatuh.—An omission having been inadvertently made in the advertisement published in our last respecting the No. 6 Company, at Waipawa, and the No. 7 Company, at Makaretu, of the Napier Malitia, we call attention to the corrected copy published this day. ‘ The s.s. Egmont, which was to have taken the place of the Lord Ashley, has returned to Sydney, but we understand that the change will be made next month.

Mr James, who was for years joint proprietor of the Kelson Examiner, but retired from it three years since on account of ill-health, died on the 28th December, at his residence, 11 route-street. Nelson, after a long illness, aged 55 years.
