The Ahuriri took a detachment of H.M’s 50th Regiment to Waikato to relieve the 14th Regiment. On the sth, when ten miles to the eastward of Cape Egmont, sighted a European boat one mile from the land, the crew laying on their oars. A canoe shortly after came out to them. The Ahuriri gave chase, but was unable to cut tnem off, the boat pulling hard in shore; when the steamer could not get nearer inland than safety permitted, the boat lay on her oars again. She was evidently manned by Europeans. A fore-and-aft schooner was Seen three miles in the offing. A most wonderful meteor passed over Taranaki and Wanganui at 2 a.m. on the 4th inst., supposed to have burst over Taranaki with a noise louder than thunder, arousing everybody from their beds in both places.
