The Arueiri and Wanganui.— We (Wellington Independent) have had the following letter handed to ns for publication:—“ S.S. Ahuriri, Wanganui, 20th October, 1864. Sir,—At the request of Captain Linklater, the s.s. Whnganui and s.s. Ahuriri met off the bar at Wanganui two hours before they could be admitted for the purpose of trying the relative speed of the two vessels. After a trial lasting one hour and twenty minutes during which time both steamers did their utmost the result has proved beyond a doubt that either before the wind and sea, or against it, or in the river, that the Ahuriri can steam faster than the Wanganui by one knot per hour, at least. Yours, &C., H. SrUTTLEWOETR. 'lre P. N. Z. and A. ELM. Co.—Messrs Houlder Brothers and Co. have despatched the fine new steamer Egmont, belonging to the Panama, New Zealand, and Australian Royal Mail Company, for Melbourne, Sydney, and the New Zealand ports. Her saloon passengers comprised—Col. Russell, of Aapier ; Messrs Bridge, Garton, Crosbie, Buckland, Smith, and Campbell, Mr and Mrs "Wall and family, Mr and Mrs Phillips, Mr and Mrs Bounnean. The Egmont left Gravesend at 10 a.m. on the 3rd instant, passed Deal at 5 p.m. same day, and landed her pilot off the Isle of Wight on the 4th inst.—“ Australian Mail,” 16th Aug.
