PERSONATING THE COMMISSIONERS.
{Sung by Small, of Thatcher’s Company, at Wellington J Thbee pure-bred pets in Wellington, Whom .7190. of course must know now, Work’d up a stunning little sell A day or two ago now: There sY , who’s lately come down here, And old M’N , from Napier, And II , too. who likes his beer: This trio form'd a plan so bold Through which a lot of folks were sold. For they personated, so I’m told, The Government Commissioners.
Now being primed and up to pitch, W ith wine and whiskey fired. They started in a one-horse trap, Which for the spree they hired. And on the road they did agree M'N should Sir Francis be. And H , too, declared that he Would act the part of Docker well: '' f' ra Gunn,",said Y , “ oh! what a sell. Along the road the folks we'll tell We’re the Government Commissioners."
"When at the toll-gate they arrived The keeper there was standing. Expecting doubtless that the toils To him they would be handing. Sir Francis whipped the old “ moke” straight. And dashed like lightning through the gate. While the tollman in a flurried state Asked for his toll. ” Oh. bosh,” said they “ When our secretary comes this way ’ The paltry toll to you he'll pay For the Government Commissioners.**
When they pulled up at C 's they Agreed to have a drain there, And Docker then proposed To go in for champagne there. But old Sir Francis said he’d not. That he preferred some whiskey 'hot. And swore he’d shout for all the lot • They tippled, aud spoke lots of slang, At length one of this Government gang Said, " Let’s go. and see Peter L So away went the Commissioners,
From thence they went to V ’s. And there, so I’ve been teld now, * The squatter C by them Was most completely sold now. So he proposed, the stupid fool, That theyjshould go and see the school Which, you must own. was ray then cool' ” By Jingo, what a lark,” said Gunn, “ Come on, my tulips, I’ll make one ” And off to see old H Went the Government Commission era.
The poor old buffer bow'd and scrap'd, And smiles beamed on his face now. To think that such distinguished guests Had visited his place now. They roamed the building through and throegh, And made inquiries not a few— A rather “ cheeky” thing to do: I\ hile poor old II with pride To all the questions ask’d replied, At length away quite satisfied Went the Government Commissioners.
As from the school they drove away, The people flock'4 in scores now To peep at the CommksSaners As they passed by their doors now. They call'd at V 's again, And there they had another drain, Then off they started in the rain, U. has been whispered in my ear, Athat it’s true X sadly fear They all came home the worse for beer— Did the Government Commissioners.
