MURDER AT TE WAIROA.
[from A CORRKSI’OXDKXT.] I Aiilsorry to inform you that there has been a most barbarous murder committed upon an ohl native named Toro Iwi, by two other natives, named Hortene ami Parankete. The ..old man has been charged with bewitching various persons, and out of revenge the two young men shot him. The ball entered the right temple and came out about an inch below the left. The old man put his hand up to his head and said a few words to some children that were near, and in a few minutes fell dead. An inquest was held on the body, by Air. IT. Brown, Resident Magistrate, on Tuesday last, and a verdict of “ Wilful Murder” was returned against Hortene and Parankete. AVe cannot but be thankful for the judicious manner in which Mr. 11. Brown acted in this very delicate case ; as the two murderers belonged to the King party and considered the deed perfectly jus tillable, and if any attempt laid been made to apprehend the parties, as was at first thought proper, the persons attempting it would most assuredly have Inst their lives. We were perfectly astonished at the martial spirit that was aroused on this occasion and thcjiumbors that collected.
