LATEST INTELLIGENCE.
Times Office, Monday, June 20, noon. Since our issue on Friday, the weather has been most severe, the gale from the S.W., accompanied by heavy rain, having still continued. The sea, too, has been very high, and, in many places, the surf came over the spits. The Eastern Spit was flooded, and many had to wade to their places of business on Friday. At the Shakspeare Flat, the water washed into the houses, and threw up the shingle against the boards of at least one, the occupants having to heat a hasty retreat. The water also came over on to the White Road, but, fortunately, not to a great extent. The road to Clive was flooded, and traffic inland suspended, the Ngaruroro ferry punt being unable to work. At Clive the town was under Water to the depth of four feet in some places, and the inhabitants had to-communicate with each other by [boats. The inland mail due on Friday was a stopped at Clive, and had not reached here at the time we write. During yesterday the weather [somewhat moderated, and the Rangatira, with the head-quarters of the 2nd Battalion of the 14th regiment, under the command of Major Dwyer, arrived at about 2 p.m. Notwithstanding the wind and rain, the head-quart-ers of the 14th were landed, and marched to the Barracks, their fine band [playing several lively airs, and as they passed the Government Buildings, to the tune of “ Gentle Annie,” the inhabitants, great and small, turned out to listen, for the first time in Napier, to the strains of a military band. Had the time and weather been more opportune, no doubt they would have met a more vociferous, but not a more hearty reception. The s.s. Wellington also arrived from the South, shortly after 11 o’clock this morning. By the Rangatira we have Auckland _ files to the 13th inst., from which we make the following extracts: —
