WAKAMARINA GOLD FIELD.
The weather is still unfavorable for gold diggers, heavy showers of rain continuing to fall at intervals, thus keeping the rivers full of water, and preventing them being worked. Considerable bodies of men arrive daily in town from the Wakamarina, which, according to all accounts, is vastly over-populated, and the season is unfavorable for prospecting. No new field has yet been reported, although parties are out searching for gold in variou| directions. Meantime we regret to see that diggers continue to leave the adjoining provinces for Wakamarina, vessels being laid on for Picton in nearly all the ports. Of the men who have found thenway to Nelson, a large number have left for the Matakitahi and the Upper Buller, a valley of considerable extent, and which is said to be auriferous throughout. From what we have heard of the extent of this district we are in no fear of seeing all the payable ground occupi d there, but, should a rush to it take place, the difficulty of supplying a large population on the Buller with provisions, in the existing state of the river, will be very great, as, although tolerably good in summer, the river in winter must, of necessity, be very bad, if a large traffic upon it should spring up. —Nelson Examiner , May 21.
