LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
Accident at Waipawa. —On last, a somewhat serious accident occurred to Mr. W, Rathbone, of Waipawa. It appears that he was conveying stores to the stockade in a spring cart, drawn by a young horse which had only been in harness a few times, when, at the West end of Waipawa, it took fright and bolted down the steep bank to the creek. The road at this point is so narrow that but one dray can pass at the sadie time, and Mr. Rathbone was pitched out and broke his arm just above the wrist. The shaft of the cart was also broken and the harness much damaged. Dr. Venn was immediately in attendance, and set the limb, and it is expected that Mr. R. will be able to attend to business again ere long. A Deserter from the 98th Regiment, named Peter Landers was arrested at Waipawa on Sunday last, and has been brought to Napier to be dealt with by the authorities.
Monster Pumpkin.— There is now to be seen at the store of Mr. Knowles, Shake-speare-road, a pumpkin weighing 621bs. and measuring 4ft. 7 inches in circumference. It was grown on the hills at Napier by Mr. Trestrail.
