To the Editor of the Hawke's Bay Times.
Sir, —I have always beard that Editors had peculiar opportunities if not ears forbearing news. Twi or three of us have been expecting to see you take some notice of a report we have lately heard, of Mr. Michael Fitzgerald going to survey for the Superintendent, without any tender being called for, the Super, being fearful of losing his P. Council man. This may be a mere little bird’s song, or it may be true. If it proves true, it will prove something more. It will, as we think, answer the question already put publicly some half-a dozen times at Gill’s and M’Nalty’s, and never satisfactorily answered—Why Mr. Michael Fitzgerald did not tender for the Government Survey Contract taken by Mr. Bousfield, for which we have heard his was the only tender. Perhaps you will notice this in your next. I remain, yours, &c,, W. S.
[Since the receipt of W.S.’s communication, we have heard the same report from another quarter. We, however, are not much surprised at it, knowing the jobbery and corruption which prevails at our Government buildings. Should such prove to be the case, it will be for the electors to be on the alert, and see that they are not wholly enslaved to the service of the Government, at the next Council meeting.— Ed. H.8.T.~]
