ELEGY ON THE DEATH OF “STONEWALL” JACKSON.

[From a Scotch Paper.] i. The tone of triumph’s lulled along the lines That once impetuous charged the Northern foe: And towards the west the setting sun declines, And leaves the host a monument of woo. IT. The pomp of war is clouded o’er with grief, Quenched is the flame each hardy bosom fired; For ho, their warlike and beloved chief, Has, even now, in vict’ry’s arms, expired, in. Well may ye mourn the hero’s parting breath; Well may ye shocked, amazed, awe-stricken, pause; For know, in Stonewall Jackson's mournful death, You’ve lost the bulwark of the Southern cause, iv. In action prompt, in measures more than bold, The Southern soldier ran a bright career; A patriot chief, cast in heroic mould, Free from reproach—Ac knew not how to fear. v. Yet was It hard to fall as Jackson fell, Though martial glory crowned his latest hour. Though fresh-culled leaves his wreath of laurels swell. Plucked by his hand from foemen’s fairest flower, vi. Was it not sad ’ncath friendship’s shaft to fall, When foiled and routed was the Northern foe; Would it not make the cup o’erflow with gall, To know & friend had dealt the fatal blow ? VII. But all was bright the way the warrior trod, The Christian soldier did not fear to die; He felt his soul was on its wing to GOD, The King or Kings, the Throne of Thrones, on high. SILVICOLA.
