LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

We would draw the attention of our readers to an advertisement in another column, announcing that Mr. Standwell will give a reading from the principal British poets, on Monday next, in the Council Chamber

Diknee to Capt. Withers.—On Tuesday night last, the Militia and Volunteers of the Napier Regiment of Militia gave a complimentary dinner to Capt. Withers, in order to demonstrate the goodwill and esteem they entertain for that experienced officer. A splendid repast was prepared by Mr. Gill, of the Masonic Hotel, to which about 40 sat down. Capt. Curling, of No. 1 Company, occupied the chair, and Capt. Kennedy, of No. 2 Company, the vice-chair. When the'edibles had been dispensed with, the usual loyal and other toasts were most efficiently proposed by the chairman, and as efficiently responded to by those present, more particularly so the toast of the evening,—“ The Health of Capt. Withers,” which was received with the greatest enthusiasm. Capt. Withers made an appropriate reply, amidst much cheering. Songs intervened the toasts, and altogether one of the most pleasant of evenings was passed and -brought to a conclusion about 12 o’clock.
