TARANAKI.

From Taranaki we have news to the 16th inst.; and the principal item of it is that an expedition had started to take possession of Sentry Hill, which was to be held for the present by 75 men of the 57th Regiment, under Capt. Sliortt. We give elsewhere an extract from the Herald, commenting upon the importance of the movement, us also an account of a little affair that took place with the natives, headed—“A Maori Dinner-party disturbed.” We have to add to this lastnamed event that Major Butler’s party went out the next morning, and found that the natives had not returned ; and it was believed they had gone straight off to Mataitawa, and as it would soon have been dark after the camp was found, there would have been no possibility of catching them on the previous evening. The Gresham, a fine vessel of 960 tons, Captain Brayley, arrived at Taranaki on Saturday last, with 420 military settlers from Melbourne, and 180 more were to follow in the Brilliant. The usual quietude of the town of Taranaki iiad, it is said, been completely upset by this arrival. There were no arms for the military settlers ; but these necessary adjuncts to military settlement will probably not be long wanting. — Daily Southern Cross, Feb. 18.
