Lord Ashley, arrived here this afternoon at 3'30 p.m. His Honor Mr. Justice Johnston was amongst the list of passengers for this port. The arrival of the Gothenburg without the English mails, created much disappointment in the city yesterday evening, especially as it was confidently anticipated through a gun being fired as the vessel passed the Ocean Beach that they were on board. In Melbourne the delay has caused some apprehension notwithstanding the fact recorded by the Argus, which will be found in an extract from that paper given in our Commercial Intelligence, that the English mails have been delivered late in the month of January for some years past. —Otago Daily Times, 26th. The Otago Witness of the 23rd instant publishes an extract from a letter received by Mr. Bell from Mr. Crosbie Ward, in which it is stated that the “ Inter-Colonial Company had taken the contract, for the Panama route, and were setting about carrying it out.” Pleuro-Pneuraonia has broken out in Southland, and in the districts of Waikouaiti and East Taeri, in the Province of Otago.
