LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

We have reserved our supplementary sheet pending the arrival of the steamers Corio and ßangatira, shortly expected. It will be issued in time for the inland mail. Town Election. —An election for the

returning a member for the Provincial Council, in the room of Dr. Hitchings, took place on Monday and Tuesday. The nomination of candidates took plat e at noon on the first named day, at the Council Chamber, before J. Curling, Esq., Returning Officer. Mr. W. Miller proposed Mr. J. Buchanan for the vacant seat, and Mr. J. Begg seconded him. Mr. Peter Searles then proposed Mr. Thomas Edwards, and Mr. M. Mullany seconded him. Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Searles having briefly addressed those present, a show of hands was taken, and declared to be in favor of Mr. Buchanan. A poll, however, was demanded on behalf of Mr. Edwards, which took place the following day, and at its close the numbers were— Edwards 40 Buchanan 32 and Mr. Edwards was declared duly elected. Mr. Searles thanked the electors on behalf of Mr Edwards, and Mr. Buchanan also thanked those who had supported him, but concluded by saying that if he wished for a seat in the Council, he could have one without having to thank the inhabitants of Napier for it. Presentation. —On Tuesday morning, last, a valuable watch and chain, was presented on parade to Drill Instructor Thornton, by Capt. Curling on behalf of No. 1 Company of Militia, who complimented him on his efficiency in the duties he had to perform. Capt. Withers also bore testimony to the valuable assistance rendered by Instructor Thornton, saying that in the course of a long experience, he had never met with a better Drill Instructor. The watch bore a suitable inscription.
