Coal ox the Waikato. —Wo have already called attention to the important discovery of coal on the \V aikato river. Last evening wo were favored with a sample of it. It is a kind of anthracite, and was raised from about 15 feet below the surface, it requires a great draft, but when ignited the heat is intense, and it burns quickly, and with little ash or smoke, and forms no clinkers, the ashes being like wood ashes. The place where it was taken from is about 150 feet above the bed of the river, and is described as very suitable for steam purposes, as it does not choko the flues, and as being superior in beating power for American stoves to the Newcastle or Nelson coal. It is found in unlimited quantity, and last Friday about 150 bag fulls'of it were got out by the sliip r s crew of the Pioneer. We understand that a tramway, winch will be about 500 yards from the coal to the river, is about to be constructed at tho expense of the the Colonial Government. The coal being 150 feet above the level of tho river, the incline will be great. At present the Pioneer consumes no other coal. —Southern Cross, Doo. 24..
