LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

We are informed that 300 troops will be sent to Napier from Auckland very shortly.

By the latest accounts from Airland, we learn that some dispute had hetween William Thompson and the Ngatimaniapoto tribes, and that the latter had cut down the king flagstaff, and sent in the flag to the General.

Fire ax the Meanee Bridge. —On Tuesday night last, between nine and ten o’clock, the stables belonging to Mr. Maney, of the Meanee Hotel, were discovered to be in flames. The fine draught entire “ Maui” was stabled in the building for the night, and despite the utmost efforts of his owner, Mr. Carmichael, and others to get him out, this fine horse was burnt to death. The origin of the fire is unknown, but suspicion rests on the Maories, several of whom were about the premises. The building was entirely destroyed, but we understand that Mr. Maney was insured to the amount of .£2OO. A subscription list lias been opened on behalf of Mr. Carmichael, who is a hard-working and industrious man, and a goodly sum has already been collected.

Hawke’s Bay Races, 1864.—A preliminary meeting to take the necessaay steps for next year’s races was held at the Masonic Hotel, on Wednesday evening last. J. B. Ferguson, Esq., occupied the chair. Mr. C. Hudson was made secretary, and Captain Curling treasurer fur the next meeting. The following gentlemen were then appointed stewards—T. Powdrell, Esq... W. Rich, Esq., G. S. Cooper, Esq., Capt. Vivian, and Capt, Gordon. The appointment of Judge, Starter, and Clerk of the Course was left in the hands of the stewards. As will be seen in our advertising columns, a second meeting is convened for the 23rd inst.

A Gazette dated 30th November, notifies the appointment of John Joseph Kelly, as Postmaster for Patangata ; also the appointment of George Andrew Oliver, Esq., as Pietnrning Officer for the Electoral District of Napier Country.
