To the Editor of the Hawke's Bay Times.
Dear Sir, —It is implied in some editorial remarks put at the foot of a letter signed “ Qui Vive,” and which letter was published in the Herald of the 31st ultimo, that but for a deficiency in the organ of “ impudence,” Captain Carter would be again returned by the Country District voters. You will admit that the quality of impudence is rather a negative recommendation. I cannot, with any candor lay claim to the distinction of having a greater quantity of the precious article mentioned than usually falls to the lot of fallible man, simply on the ground of my desire to represent my neighbors in the Provincial Council, in the room
of Captain Carter. On the contrary I feel highly flattered by the reception I have met with troni the electors, and which reception I have met with from the Electors, and which implies not so much a superabundance of impudence on my part, as a lack of certain more important qualities on the part of Captain Carter.
Whether or not I shall prove myself a better representative of the Country Districts in the Provincial Council, in the event of my letuin, than roy illustrious predecessor, remains to be seen, but that I cannot, in all human probability, prove a worse one, is a generally admitted fact. If, however, any gentleman, who has done me the honor to promise me his vote, upon second thoughts wishes to give that vote to Captain Carter, I shall be delighted, I am sure, to waive all question upon the subject, and shall cordially admit that I was mistaken in supposing that the distinguished Captain and the Provicial Government are at a discount. Yours, 0. L. W. Bousfield.
