THE WIMBLEDON RIFLE MEETING.
On Friday the weather was very hot but hazy, and therefore not favourable for shooting. Probably owing to this cause the average of the shooting was not so high as was anticiaated. A volunteer maker was siiot in the hand at one of the disc butts, but did not require surgical assistance. The first stage of the Queen’s Prize was concluded on Friday. The following are scores of of the competitors [left in for the tie —Private Whisker (2nd Essex), 19 ; Sergeant Millard (St. George’s), 49; Private Miller (Ist Gloucester), 47 ; Captain Henderson (L2lh Cornwall), 44 ; Sergeant Winser (3rd Kent), 44. On Saturday the weather was fine, and the tie : shooting for first stage Queen’s Prize was shot off. For the Prince of Wales’s Prize, Corporal Rum - bold, 3rd Kent, made 58 points, ami was declared the winner.—The St. George’s Challenge Yaso was won by Private Jopling, South Middlesex. The next highest shots being ties for the next prizes, were shot of on Monday, and are reported below.—ln All-comers, 500 yards, small bore, on Monday, Lord Fielding, Flint; Corporal Ferguson, Ist Inverness; and Private Ashton, Liverpool, each scored 27. At GOO yards, Captain Jessop, 12th Derby, and Captain Fenton, 26th Lancashire, made 25 each. For the Enfield Allcomers, 200 yards, Ensign Lloyd, 14th Middlesex ; Captain Gibbon, Ist Edinburgh; Private Meakin, 2nd Derby ; and Sergeant Miller, 10th Berks, made 4 each. For the Enfield All-comers, 500 yards. Corporal Sysler, Ist Aberdeen, 24 points. In first series extra prizes, Sergeant Cunliffe, 26th Cheshire, and Sergeant Fletcher, Ist Warwick, made 27 each ; in 2nd series, 600 yards, 5-77 boro Private Ilibbs, 6th Dorset, scored 22.
The Whitworths were distributed to the competitors for the Queen’s Prize, and Lord Ducie instructed them in the details of that weapon at the sighting target. Captain Herbert, of the Coldstream Guards, made tho followsng score at the running deer: —For 60 shots he made eight bull’s eyes—two consecutive—twenty-six centres, ten outers, and six misses.
On Monday the weather was favorable for shooting; and tho presence of the Prince and Princess of Wales attracted 3,000 or 4,000 visitors. The royal parly arrived about three o’clock. The competition between the members of the Lords and Commons then commenced. The following is tho result of the gross score at 200 and 500 yards : Commons: Viscount Bury, 60; Hon. W. Duncombe, 50 ; Mr. Dillwyan, 44 ; Sir P. Egerton, 39 ; Mr. Forster, 35 ; Earl Grosvernor, 47 ; Mr. Humberston, 37 ; Mr. Talbot, 30 ; Mr. Vivian, 48 ; Mr. A. Wemyss, 30 Lord Elcho, 44. Total, 460. —Lords : Earl Ducie, 50 ; Marquis of Abercorn, 49 ; Earl of Airlie, 34 : Lord Bolton, 46 ; Lord Sullield, 3 4 ; Earl Dunmore, 43; Lord Dufferin, 22 ; Duke of Marlborough, 30 ; Earl Gronard, 23Lord Londesborough, 31; Lord Wharnelilfe, 51; Total, 423. The Commons th us won by 37 points
On Wednesday, tlie weather was again fine and hot. The following are the results of the day’s shooting : —The Albert Prize, won by Sergeant M. Smith, Victoria Rifles, who made the remarkable score of 73 points at 800, 900, and 1,000 yards, being eight more than Sergeant Roberts made at the same distance for the Queen’s Prize. Ensign Brazill, 01st Lancashire, second, with 70 points. Other good scores were—Captain Greig, 27th Cheshire, 00 ; Captain Heaton, 3rd Manchester, 07 ; Private Lalhbury, 3Sth Lancashire, G 3 ; Sergeant Gibbs. Bristol, 62 ; and Private Ashton, Liverpool R. 8., 62. In 500 yards (all competitors), on Tuesday, it was stated that Captain Heaton, won the first prize, £SO, and Sergeant Smith, of the Victorias, £lO. These gentlemen were ties ; they did not shoot, off, and have divided the first and second prizes. For Extra Prizes, 800 yards, Sergeant Boynton, sth East York, made 27 points; Captain M’Gibboin Edinburgh, Sergeant Brown, 13th Lancashire, and Captain Ross, Kincardine, 26 each. For Extra Prizes, 800 yards, Sergeant Boynton, slh East York, Sergeant Cobb, 3Sth Middlesex, and Captain M’Gib* bon, 21 each. First Stage House of Lords ; First prize was won by Corporal Sarsons, 22nd Middlesex, 2G points, £2O; Hooper, 19th Middlesex, 25 points, £lO. On Thursday, the feature of (he day was tho contest between England and Scotland, which bad not terminated at gunfire, the Scotch party deciding not to compete at tho last range of 1,000 yards until Friday, although the English competitors had commenced, owing to their firing more
quickly. Some of Uie shooting was most remarkable, Captain Ilcalon making twelve bull’s eyes out of fifteen shots at 1)00 yards, Serjeant Smith 10 at the same distance. On the Scotch side, Captain E. Ross 11 bull’s eyes at 000 yards, and Captain 11. Ross, 6lh Kincardine, 10 bull’s eyes at 800 yards. The gross result of the firing at 800 or 1)00 yards was a majority of 20 in favor of England, as shown in tho following i-cturn : England; Lord Bury, 101, Lieutenant-colonel Halford, 101, Captain Heaton 110, Lord Ducie, 00, Serjeant Smith, 101, Lieutenant Hawker, 95. Private Ashton, 07, Captain Rowland, S 3. Total —7BO. Scotland: Captain H. Ross, 106, Captain E. Ross, 105, Lord Elcho, 80, Lieutenant Colin Ross, 88, Hercules Ross, 100, Master of Lovnt. 83, Corporal Ferguson, 05, J. Farquharson, 01. Total —751. At tho 1,000 yards range the English eight had scored 243, with five shots each to lire next day. Tho Association Cup was won by Captain Heaton, 3rd Manchester, with a total score of 80.
