NAPIER AFFAIRS
The following in extracted from the last letter of the Napier correspondent of the Daily Southern Cross : “ In native affairs and politics generally there is a lull. Mr. M’Lean has gone south, first to Wellington and then to Otago ; and Mr. J. D. Ormond reigns in his stead. The Herald tells us that his Honor has gone to arrange about the Wellington debt and outstanding claims ; but rumour—the lying jade—says that Donald is all there at looking after number one, and has taken advantage of the prospect of a few weeks’ cessation from native alarms to have a look at his sheep stations in the Wellington and Otago districts.” “ I see that tho Legislative Council has received an addition to its number in the person of Major Whitmore of this district. That gentleman already holds a plurality of offices to an extent quite astounding. He is Civil Commissioner, Commandant of the Defence Force, and Major Commanding Militia and Volunteers, and I don’t know what besides; as well as having very large private interests to look after ; and how he is to devote three months, or whatever may be the duration of the session, to his new duties is an “ unmitigated staggerer.” No doubt the work will have to be done by deputy ; some are ill-natured enough to say that tho public service will bo no gi’eat loser in consequence.
