THE THIRD-CLASS MILITIA CALLED ■ OUT AT AUCKLAND. THE FIRST AND SECOND ORDERED TO DRURY. THE AVON UNDER FIRE. COROMANDEL ABANDONED. The third class militia had been called out to do patrol duty, and the lirst and second class were under orders for Drury. The natives had erected a formidable redoubt at Rokeno, on the banks of the Waikato and had four cannon, two of which are supposed to be those taken from the Lord Worsley. It is supposed that they use scoria for balls. The Avon when on a reconnoitering expedition saw a force of 1000 natives on the banks of the Waikato, who immediately after opened fire on the vessel, but did no damage The hostile demonstration was responded to from the Armstrong Guns on board, which are supposed to have done some execution. The diggings at Coromandel had been abandoned, as well as the saw mills which have been erected in that district. The wives and families of the settlers on the Wairoa had left the district in the cutter Sydney for Auckland. H.M.S.S. Miranda arrived in the Manakau from Sydney on the 10th after a quick run of five and a half days. She brought no troops, nor, as was expected, did she bring the gunboat for the Waikato. Her presence on the coast will prove an acquisition at this juncture. An alarming fire occurred on the 11th. The fire commenced in a grocery store, spread on both sides of the street, causing great alarm and doing much damage. The steamer. T. S. Mort was abandoned on the passage from Hokianga to Sydney. She had a valuable cargo. The New Zealand Insurance Company will lose some A3OOO by this mishap. Colonel Carey has been appointed to the command of the garrison at Auckland. The head-quarters of the 70th Eegt., were taken by the Lady Bird from Taranaki to Auckland. They were marched to the camp at Otahuhu.
