LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
A General Government Gazette of the Bth inst. announced that the Assembly shall assemble for the despatch of business on the 19th day of October next, at 2 o’ clock p.m. Melancholy Case of Drowning. —lt is our painful duty to have to chronicle the death of Mr. John Ross by drowning in the Ngaruroro river. It appears that deceased and Mr. Rich were driving cattle from the direction of Clive towards the Ferry, and that some of them turnd off into the river below that point, and were followed by deceased and Mr. Rich into the water with the object of turning them. Mr. Rich turned back when he found the water was nn to the saddle flaps, but deceased went on, notwithstanding Mr, Rich’s repeated calls for him to come back, until the horse got beyond its depth, when it became restive and after a short struggle both horse and rider went down. Immediate search was made by the ferry boat for the deceased, but without success, and up to last evening he had not been found. Deceased leaves a wife and large family, but fortunately not destitute of means. He was a bombardier in the Artillery with above twenty years service we believe.
