We have had another sad loss of one of the American mail steamers, the Anglo-Saxon; she ran on some rocks, just off Cape Race, in a fog. 237 souls were lost, and the whole of the mails. There has been an awful earthquake in the island of Rhodes, in the Levant. It lasted four days. Over 2,000 houses have been destroyed, and some 500 people killed; all the old buildings reminding us of past ages during the Saracenic supremacy, have been destroyed. The Sultan, immediately upon receipt of this sad intelligence, sent steamers to convey many surgeors to relieve the wounded, as well as a subscription of 500,000 piastres. So great was the shock, that at one time it was a general belief the island ffould hare been entirely swallowed up.
