To the Editor of the HawJce's Bay Times.

Sin, —I notice in the Herald of Saturday last, an epistle signed "No Gammon,” but which appears to me to be full of gammon.

None but an interested party would have taken the trouble to write such a letter, and I think none but a man having some practical knowledge of the “ tricks of the trade” could have written such a letter, and it is easy to imagine who the writer was. Your leading remarks were evidently too much for his weak nerves, and he had recourse to this little manoeuvre as a dernier ressort. I would draw “ No Gammon’s” attention to the issue of the Herald on the 11th of October last, wherein he will find he can “ brag” to any extent both as to the quantity and quality of his news. There he will find fourteen columns and a half of advertisements, which I hope he may get paid for, and actually the enormous sum of a column and a half —what shall I say ? I cannot say news ; I must therefore particularize—A commercial paragraph, a little shipping, and an article headed “ The millstone round the neck of Hawke’s Bay,” fill the space last mentioned. “No Gammon” also alludes to your advertisements. Let us briefly examine some of those in the Herald. After thej reader has digested a sufficient quantity of “Eley’s Ammunition,” there is a large dish of “ Bridge’s Quintessence of Jamaica Ginger,” blended with “ Seidlitz Powders” and “ Sarsaparilla,” and plenty of “Worcestershire Sauce” in addition. Should he suffer from indigestion, he can take some “ Camomile Pills,” or a strong dose of “ Holloway’s” and some “ Ointment,” well rubbed in. * There are several more I might recommend to the readers’ attention, but hope those already mentioned will suffice to convince him of the savoury mess always to be seen served up in the Herald’s best style. I will not say more at present, but would just recommend the writer of “ No Gammon” to cast the beam out of his own eye before hej attempts to cast the mote out of yours.

I am, &c., One not to be Gammoned Napier, 6th July, 1863.
