The great success which hai attended the working of steamers in the coasting trade of Rew Zealand has demonstrated the fac that such a trade can be profitably followed, anc it is believed that the Province can now very wel maintain two steamers in constant employment The want of a suitable local steamer has been se i erely felt for the past 18 months—flockowners anc others having been thereby shut out from the higl markets existing both in Otago and Auckland. Tin uncertainty of the voyage precludes shipping bj sailing vessels, while the accommodation afibrdcc by the mail steamer, irrespective of the danger sue delay of loading in the roadstead, is inadequate iho steamers which this company proposes to pur ciiase arc of the dimensions recommended by pi actical men of experience and standing after £ careful inspection of the Port of Rapier, and wil each be about 140 tons register, or 250 tom builders’ measurement. Length, about 120 tc 125 ft. over all; breadth of beam, 20 ft.; depth, 1 teet; draught, when loaded, 7* feet. Each stea mcr to have 2 engines of 25 nominal horse power to have a half-poop dock for passengers, and ca buis fitted up for 16 gentlemen and 6 ladies berths, besides steerage accommodation. Buch steamers will provide for the dovelopmcn of the goods and passenger traffic, which is callec lor by tiic growing importance of the Port of Ra pier. As the conveyance of live stock may be expcc ted to form a very profitable source of revenue, the steamers will be built with a view to this, ’anc will each carry from 500 to 600 wethers.
