AUCKLAND.

The Southern Cross lias the following remarks on the future supply of butcher's meat for Auckland. In Auckland we are in a very anomalous position. Many of the out-settlers are fetching in their cattle, and disposing of them owing to the state of the country, so that in the Waikato district we need not count on tho natural increase of stock as a certainty of supply for many years. Our civilian population is steadily increasing, and the consumption of butchers’ meat increases in like proportion. It would bo idle to say that tho natural increase of horned cattle and sheep in the available parts of the province, bears any proportion to tho increase of population, the recent rise in price to lOd. per lb. being tho best proof. Wo need not expect much from Wellington owing to the Otago and Nelson diggings, tho latter of which appears to bo attracting a mining population. We must depend upon ourselves and Hawke’s Bay. Tbo overland route to Napier is now unavailable. Wo have no steamer suited for (he cattle trade on the coast, and the supply will always be precarious with sailing vessels. We may count shortly

on three British regiments, with their women and children, being added [do our population in less than six months, and wo would ask, from whence are we to draw our supplies for these men ? If the restrictions on the importation of cattle be not removed, either they will do without animal food or the civilians must, as there will not bo enough for all unless extravagant prices be paid.
