She brings sixteen head into port, having lost five on the passage. H.M.S. Sloop Eclipse, Commander Mayne, arrived in the Manukau, yesterday morning, from Taranaki, bringing the intelligence of the murder by the natives of two officers and six men. She leaves again for there this day, with 200 men of the 40th, and 50 of the 70th Regiment. H.M.S. Sloop Eclipse, Commander Mayne, was (dotaiued insido the barton Tuesday on account of
tho tide. Crossed on Wednesday forenoon, and arrived at New Plymouth same night. About six o’clock observed a strange fire, which at first was supposed to be a ship on fire; altered course and stood in for the light, which was discovered to be on shore. On arriving at Taranaki they learnt the particulars of tho massacre. Could this light have been a beacon fire to apprise the natives at a distance of the commencement of the war? The Eclipse sails again to-day, and will return on Sunday.— lbid.
