MILITARY MOVEMENTS.
Fkom a private letter from London we learn that General Cameron, C. 8., is to go home to England, and is spoken of in connection with the Aldershott command, which will shortly be vacant. There is to he a MajorGeneral sent out and New Zealand will be made the Head Quarters of the Australian Colonies. Auckland, it is said, will be the great naval station for these colonies. In the Home News, February 10th, we find the following':— No successor to Lieut.-General Cameron in New Zealand has yet been selected. A new arrangement respecting the Australian staff is about to be made. Ihe Major-General commanding thc.troops will be in New Zealand, and a Brigadier General under him at Melbourne. Several minor changes in the way of reduction will ensue, the divisional staff at Melbourne coming down to the dimensions of a brigade staff. We understand that Major General Sir Jno. Pennefather who has been in bad health, is not unlikely to resign the Aldershott command before long, and Licut.-General Sir Richard Airey is spoken of as his probable successor. The name of Licut.-General Cameron, about to return to England from New Zealand, has been mentioned in connexion with the anticipated vacancy. The following changes in the appointments of the military in New Australia are rumoured:— Colonel Chute, of the 70th, to proceed to Melbourne and replace General Pratt with the rank of Brigadier. Colonel Carey to come to Auckland to fill the offices of Assistant-Military-Secretary and Adjutant-General. Also, that on the departure of General Cameron for England in July or August, Colonel Galloway, of the 70th, will take command, with the rank of Major-General.— Daily Southern Cross, April 27:
