Edmund Tuke, Esq. Solicitors : —Robert Hart, Esq., Wellington; and J. N. Wilson, Esq., Napier. Provisional Secretary :—John G. Kinross, Esq. o THE object of the proposed Company ia to procure two screw steamers of a capacity and draught of water suited for the requirements of the Fort of Napier. The great success which has attended the working of steamers in the coasting trade of New Zealand has demonstrated the fact that such a trade can be profitably followed, and it is believed that the Province can now very well maintain two steamers in constant employment. The want of a suitable local steamer has been severely felt for the past 18 months—flockowners and others having been thereby shut out from the high markets existing both in Otago and Auckland. The uncertainty of the voyage precludes shipping by sailing vessels, while the accommodation afforded by the mail steamer, irrespective of the danger and delay of loading in the roadstead, is inadequate. The steamers which this company proposes to purare of the dimensions recommended by practical men of experience and standing after a careful inspection of the Port of Napier, and will each be about 1-10 tons register, or 250 tons builders’ measurement. Length, about 120 to 125 ft. over all; breadth of beam, 20 ft.; depth, 9 feet; draught, when loaded, 7i feet. Each steamer to have 2 engines of 25 nominal horse power ; to have a half-poop deck for passengers, and cabins fitted up for 16 gentlemen and 6 ladies berths, besides steerage accommodation. Such steamers will provide for the dovclopment of the goods and passenger traffic, which is called for by the growing importance of the Port of Napier. As the conveyance of live stock may bo expected to form a very profitable source of revenue, the steamers will be built with a view to this, and will each carry from 500 to GOO wethers. This Company may with confidence calculate on receiving the liberal subsidy for steam purposes voted by the Provincial Council of Hawke’s Bay. It is proposed that this company shall have a capital of £15,000 in 750 shares of £2O each, with power to issue new shares if necessary. The qualification for voting at the election of the first Board of Directors shall be the payment of Deposit of 10s., and the first call of £2 per'share. Shareholders shall be allowed to vote by proxy. Any qualified Shareholder holding 10 Shares in his own right shall be eligible for election to the Board of Directors.
