CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Hawke's Say Times. Sin, —The world is full of envious wretches, that are always disappointed to see another man get on better than themselves. The more merited the success the greater the discontent of the selfish fellows I refer to. It’s a great failing of mine to confess the truth and shame the Devil, and I am not going to do violence to my feelings now. I belong to the unfortunate class of envious grumblers I h ave just pointed out, and the object of my present unreasonable jealousy is the Superintendent’s Clerk.—Just look now at this— Salary for real hard work and no mistake £230 Private pickings for writing legal and other matter ... £l5O Extra Salary for more very hard work £ 25 £425 1 ! By Jove Sir! Look at this and weep. Refreshing instance of Provincial retrenchment under the nouveau regime. Kow'l will tell you what I should say if I were Superintendent—“ Mr. P., your birth, parentage and education are unexceptionable—l can find no fault with you as a gentleman, and your dress and personal appearance is quite up to T. But the Province is in difficulties. and we must curtail. I shall suggest in Council that you still have the handsome salary of £250 per annum with a little more work; and after hours of business arc over go and earn as much as you please, but for the sake of example and oi'oer powerful reasons I must insist upon no extraneous work being done in my office during business hours.” With this blessing I should ease my feelings and do my duty and subscribe myself O. W. KIPPER. Xapier, April 13, 1863.
