NEWS FROM THE SOUTH.
By the s.s. Storm Bird, which arrived in port on the morning of Monday last, we have our usual tiles from the South.
Samuel Bealey, Esq., had been returned as Superintendent of Canterbury, without opposition.
Mr. Moorhouse had delivered a farewell address to the electors of Canterbury. In it he advocates a separation (temporary if possible) of the two islands, on the ground that there was not, the remotest chance of the war being settled as long as the two islands were joined together. [We confess we cannot see what difference the mere fact of the two islands being joined together can make.) A cricket mutch had been played by eleven of Nelson and eleven of Marlborough. Scores : —lst innings ; Nelson, 51; Marlborough, 64. 2nd innings: Nelson, 121 ; Marlborough, 66. Total, —Nelson, 172 ; Marlborough, 130.
A pass to the Duller Diggings (Nelson), had heen discovered.
Tiie Daily Times. Feb. 24, states the escort returns to bo 37,401 ozs. 4 dwts. The same journal, March 6, says “ The escort from the diggings, due to-day, will bring down B,G3b ozs. 10 dwts. from the Dunstan. We have no information as to the quantity from Tuapeka and the other diggings.'"’ The 14th inst. was fixed for the election of the Otago Superintendent. There was a. keenly fought contest beginning between Mr. Harris and Major Ilichardson. A fearful tragedy had occurred at Amuri, near Kai Koras. Two natives killed, and two seriously injured. Elsewhere will be found extracts from some of the journals to hand.
