Kinross, Esq o THE object of the proposed Company is to procure two screw steamers of a capacity and draught ol water suited lor the requirements of the i’ort of Rapier. The great success which has attended tire working of steamers in the coasting ti-aue ot Yew Zealand lias demonstrated the fact tliai such a trade can be profitably followed, and it is believed that the Province can now very well maintain tuo steamers in constant employment.* Inc want of a suitable local steamer lias been severely felt for the past 18 months—tlockowners and others having been thereby shut out from the high mar kets existing both in Otago and Auckland. The uncertainty ot tiro voyage precludes shipping by sailing vessels, while the accommodation afforded by the marl steamer, irrespective of the danger and delay ol loading in the roadstead, is inadequate. The steamers which this company proposes to purchase are ol the dimensions recommended practical men of experience and standing after a carcml inspection of the Port of Rapier, and will cacti be about 110 tons register, or 250 tons builders measurement. Length, about 120 to 12j it. over all; breadth of beam, 20 ft. ; dentil y iect; draught, when loaded, 7) feet. Each steamer to have z engines of 25 nominal horse power • to have a half-poop deck for passengers, and cabins litted up for 16 gentlemen and 6 ladies berths, besides steerage accommodation. bucli steamers v. ill provide for the development of the goods and passenger traffic, which is called for by lire growing importance of the Port of Rapier. As the conveyance of live stock may be expected to form a very profitable source of revenue, the steamers will bo built with a view to this, and will each carry from 500 to 600 wethers. This Company may with confidence calculate on receiving the liberal subsidy for steam purposes voted by the Provincial Council of Hawke’s Bay. It is proposed that this company shall have a capital of £15,000 in 750 shares of £2O each, with power to issue new shares if necessary. The qualification for voting at the election of the first Board of Directors shall be the payment of Deposit of 10s,, and the first call of £2 per'sharc.
