LOCAL INTELLIGENCE
Advance Napiee ! —We are very glad to have to notice that a prospecting party set out from Waipawa a few days ago, in order to find gold in this Province. Should they succeed in their efiorts, and discover an available gold field, which it is to be hoped they will, it will certainly be the making of Hawke’s Bay. Wherever the precious metal has been found, in any part of the world, population and wealth as surely followed in its track, —as witness California and Australia, or, to come nearer home, Otago. It is a matter of regret that they did not set out earlier in the summer, but “ better late than never.”
Gold Prospecting Party.—We understand that Mr. Sturm, of Nuhaka, and two others, intend starting on a prospecting tour this day, Monday. The party intend exploring the Patea district, proceeding on to the range of the Ruahine, as the most likely localities where the precious metal is to he found. Mr. Sturm anticipates being absent for about two months, and calculates the cost at about £lO per week exclusive of tools, &c. We wish the party every success, and hope they may prove the fortunate discoverers of a good payable gold field for Hawke’s Bay. Deserters.—hive men belonging to the barque Constance deserted that vessel in the early part of last week, but have since been captured by the police some distance inland, and were brought in on Saturday last. We beg to draw attention to the Hawke’s Bay Steam Navigation Company’s advertisement in our second page, received after the one contained in the first page had been printed. Rain at Last ! —Rain, so much wanted, and so anxiously looked for, has at last come. It commenced on the evening of Friday last, and has continued ever since.
